Color Theory in Design

Color Theory in interior design refers to the study of how colors can be combined to create a harmonious, appealing, and functional visual effect. The choice of color combination, as well as how they are used, will contribute to achieving the overall desired effect. Even though you may just like two colors together, they may not create the overall mood you’re going for. I’ve gathered some helpful tips below to guide you through your color choosing process.

  • Choose a color scheme: A color scheme is a combination of colors that work well together. There are several types of color schemes, such as monochromatic, complementary, analogous, and triadic. Choose a color scheme that suits the mood and style of the space you are designing.

  • Pay attention to where you place certain colors from your color scheme: Using light colors on walls and ceilings can make a room feel more spacious, while dark colors can make it feel more intimate.

  • Use the 60-30-10 rule: This rule suggests that you should use 60% of one dominant color, 30% of a secondary color, and 10% of an accent color. This helps to create a balanced and cohesive look.

  • Consider the mood and purpose of the space: Different colors can evoke different emotions and moods. For example, blue is calming and serene, while red is energizing and passionate. Choose colors that match the mood you want to create.

  • Pay attention to color temperature: Warm colors, such as red, orange, and yellow, tend to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere, while cool colors, such as blue, green, and purple, can make a space feel calm and relaxing.

  • Experiment with texture and patterns: You can use different textures and patterns to add depth and interest to a space. Consider using textures and patterns that complement or contrast with the colors you have chosen.

  • Test colors in the space: It's important to test the colors you have chosen in the space you are designing. Colors can look different in different lighting conditions, so it's a good idea to test them at different times of the day.
